Basically, they're all random right now. There are provisions in the code for the game to have a set of default companions available and have some randomly generated. The goal is for the game to generate with +/- 5 of 20-25 Companions of a mix of both sorts. (Or, perhaps, the guaranteed ones with the rest being randomly generated.)

In Mount & Blade 2, your HP is the same as everyone, king or beggar. That's why having a shield is the best insurance plan a noble can have back in the day and one-handed weapons allow such safety . We don't recommend picking more than two melee weapon proficiencies unless you want to be a medieval commando.
They have - 2 (!) best leaders with 100 tactics and leadership (Falcon and Golden). Companions cannot improve their leadership. Other nations have far worse leaders.
